Smart Gilas Pilipinas, the country's representative to the recently concluded Jones Cup 2011 at the Hsinjhuang stadium in New Taipei City, Taiwan, bag third place when they beat the host country Chinese Taipei, 82-72 on Sunday-August 14, 2011.
This is Philippines third time to win third place in the same basketball tournament. The first one was in 2005, then in 2007 and this year with Smart Gilas Pilipinas.
However, the Philippines also have three championship titles in the same event - 1981 (NCC), 1985 (San Miguel Beer) and 1998 (Centennial Team).
The exhausting Jones Cup stint, wherein team Philippines played nine games in nine straight days, is part of the Smart Gilas Pilipinas' preparation for the 2011 FIBA-Asia Men’s Championship in September, which serves as the qualifier to the 2012 London Olympics.
Smart Gilas Pilipinas will also travel to Doha on August 24 to 29 to join a pocket tournament along with the national teams of Qatar, Lebanon, and Syria.
